The story of Kilay
Crossing Countries and Learning to Sell
Kilay was born in Caracas, Venezuela, to artist parents. His father worked as a photographer, while his mother ran dance studios, taught music, and kept creativity close to daily life. Kilay spent his earliest years near the ocean and among people from varied backgrounds, experiences that made difference feel ordinary rather than threatening. His father later moved the family to Miami after concluding that Venezuela's political direction would become dangerous.
The change was abrupt from Kilay's perspective. He also watched family wealth recede as he grew old enough to understand money, moving from easy access to learning that desired items required saving or work. Sales became an instinctive response. He invented products, tried to sell a comic called Los Punks, and repeatedly offered services to companies in exchange for computers, cars, and other things he could not simply buy.
A Career Built From Repeated Failure
Kilay's entrepreneurial career crossed an unusually wide set of industries. He helped develop an early eBay drop-off store concept that achieved broad attention, then was fired and sued while his immigration status felt uncertain. Later efforts included affiliate marketing, a youth sports platform that failed to gain funding, financial services work he found ethically uncomfortable, sports agency ventures, music events, travel, and consumer goods. At the time, many of those episodes felt like losses rather than useful instruction.
With distance, he came to see each one as a tool added to a larger operating kit. Sales, partnerships, websites, branding, fundraising, and crisis management became transferable capabilities. The important lesson was not that failure automatically improves a person. It was that he could examine the failure, preserve the useful skill, and apply it in a new setting instead of allowing one painful outcome to define his identity.
DSTRCT and the Long Value of Community
DSTRCT brings Kilay's experience in brands, events, consumer products, and partnerships into a Web3 ecosystem centered on community. He is interested in decentralization not as an abstract slogan but as a way to let members participate in the culture and direction of what they support. The project also reflects his belief that the most valuable outcomes often arrive years after an initial relationship. A person met through one venture may become a collaborator in another, and a failed product can create the skill needed for a later opportunity.
Kilay therefore emphasizes real conversations and in-person trust alongside digital community tools. DSTRCT is the current container for that accumulated network and operating range. Rather than presenting it as a single perfect idea, he treats it as another long-term build where community, storytelling, and practical entrepreneurship can reinforce each other through changing markets.
